Given some more reading, FreeNAS is using minio for its S3 but it appears from an old post I found that using FreeNAS S3 is not the same as using Wasabi S3 (as I use Syno Hyperbackup to Wasabi S3 with no problems) Question: given the above, and given your experience, may I ask your suggested backup suggestion. Two Synology devices on the LAN and I wish to back them both up to another box on the LAN (Dell Server running ESXi with a H310 passthrough for FreeNAS VM with ZFS-2 Qty 8 4TB Exos drives (24TB avail). I respect your knowledge so let me rephrase my target goal. I've well aware how solid rsync is I have simply never used it.

I've never used rsync and tend to be cautious in using new things for mission critical backups. In other words, I was simply using a backup app I was very comfortable in using. To the best of my knowledge, I cannot use SMB for a Hyperbackup Vault but can use S3 bucket.

To answer you : why bother with S3 ? I've gotten to like HyperBackup with its versions over the years of using it. Most common mistake is forgetting to specify or incorrect endpoint (such as is-east-1, which is Minio default)Īnd lastly - if server is in your control - why bother with S3? Then, once you have working config - try with hyper backup.

You you will be able to get better diagnostics that way as opposed to adding HyperBackup into the mix. I would recommend first using CyberDuck or Transmit to connect to your S3 destination to confirm that the credentials (id, secret, password and endpoint) are correct and verify that your S3 server is reachable and operationable. Post your configuration and the error log your are getting.

FreeNAS is running what? Minio? That one also works fine.
